Class Q refers to a planning right in England that allows the conversion of agricultural buildings into residential dwellings without a full planning permission application, though prior approval is required.

It permits limited building operations necessary for the conversion, such as installing windows, doors, and services, but does not allow for the complete demolition and rebuilding of a structure. This “Permitted Development” right is intended to diversify the rural economy by providing new homes.

The existing barn, thought to have been built in the 1960s, is constructed of blockwork half-height walls with a combination of hit-and-miss timber cladding, grey corrugated metal and grey corrugated fibre-cement cladding to the facade.
